Weimaraners - Health Issues

Weimaraners are generally a healthy breed. Robust and tough dogs, they normally live to be 10-14 years. A Weimaraner obtained from a reputable breeder should not experience any serious health problems. The dogs of this breed can be prone to bloat, hip dysplasia, hypertropic osteodystrophy, tumors, and ear infections. Proper care, diet, and regular veterinary check-ups will reduce the risk of developing this or that condition.

Weimaraners - Breed Origins

The Weimaraner breed is known to have been developed by Germans as far back as the 19th century. There are numerous theories as to the exact origins of this aristocratic breed. One theory claims that the Weimaraner is descended from the German hound, the Braken. The breed could have been the result of crossings between a regular pointer and a certain yellow pointer.

Originally, Weimaraners were used for hunting, and tracking big game. These dogs were also excellent water retrievers. These days, Weimaraners have been used in a number of working spheres, such as rescue dogs, therapy dogs, and even police dogs in England and Germany.

Weimaraners - Care

The four major areas that require quite a lot of attention in this breed are the ears, teeth, nails and coat. The Weimaraner's coat is smooth, and short. It is rather easy to maintain the dog's coat in a fine condition. What you should do is to brush your pet with a firm bristle brush on a regular basis. Examine the dog's the feet and mouth for the signs of damage and infection after work or exercises. The nails should be regularly trimmed. Weimaraners are average shedders.
